DeepSeek Closes a ¥105.5B Round (~$15.8B) at ¥615.5B Valuation — the API-Side Read
Short answer
- DeepSeek's second funding round is done, according to details published October 30 by The Information and relayed across Chinese financial media: ¥105.5 billion raised (≈$15.8B), post-money valuation ¥615.5 billion (≈$86B), nearly 30 investors. The largest private round in China this year.
- DeepSeek has not officially confirmed any of it — and it never will on its own channels; the company doesn't do funding announcements. Everything below is reported-tier, sourced and attributed.
- The API-side read: this round is about buying compute before it gets more expensive (B300 servers went from ¥15M to ¥19M per unit, per the report). It is not a signal that prices will drop. The two levers that actually cut your bill today are unchanged: off-peak windows and context caching.
The round, as reported
| Round 1 (June 2026) | Round 2 (closed, disclosed Oct 30) | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | ≈¥50B (~$7B) | ¥105.5B (~$15.8B) |
| Investors | Tencent ¥10B, CATL ¥5B, Liu Wenzhong ¥20B, NetEase/JD/IDG ¥3B each | Nearly 30 investors |
| SOE share | 2% | 27% |
| Post-money valuation | not disclosed | ¥615.5B (~$86B) |
The round-2 roster, per 21st Century Business Herald's relay of The Information's reporting: Tencent (¥10B again, ¥20B across both rounds) and CATL (¥10B, double its first-round check) led. New industrial money includes CXMT (ChangXin Memory) and its chairman Zhu Yiming, SMIC, vivo, Meituan, Geely, Midea, Luxshare, Ctrip and Xiaohongshu at ¥1B–3B each. State capital stepped up hard: the national AI industry fund put in ¥1B, China Mobile, China Telecom, CICC, CITIC Securities and China Life each put in ¥2B–8B, and state investors as a group covered 27% of this round versus 2% in June.
Liang Wenzhong remains the largest single investor in round 1 at ¥20B, and per the coverage he personally holds about 34% of the company with 100% of the voting power: outside money enters through limited partnerships he manages, carries no board control, and is locked up for roughly five years. Two rounds, ~¥155B in, and the founder has not diluted an ounce of control.
Why raise at all — and why now
The report gives two reasons, and both are supply-side:
- Compute is inflating faster than revenue. Nvidia B300 servers reportedly went from ¥15M to ¥19M per unit this year. At DeepSeek's scale, every capacity expansion is a nine-figure decision made against a moving price.
- A deliberate hedge against the AI bubble. The coverage is explicit that management treats this war chest as insurance: if the current AI spending wave sours, DeepSeek wants to be the lab that can keep building through the winter without needing anyone's permission.
Context worth keeping from the same reporting: annualized revenue has reportedly doubled past $1B, and — the line that matters most for pricing watchers — the September price increase did not chase customers away. Revenue doubled after it.
What it means if you're buying DeepSeek tokens today
- Do not wait for prices to fall. A cash-rich DeepSeek with doubled revenue, no churn, and no investor pressure to monetize has every reason to keep pricing exactly where it is. The ¥105.5B buys capacity, not discounts.
- Capacity risk goes down, price risk doesn't. The main near-term fear for heavy users was supply crunches during peak windows. More capital plus more data centers makes that less likely, which quietly protects the off-peak discount's real value.
- The structural savings were never pricing-page deep. Cache hits at $0.003/1M input and the 133-hour weekly off-peak window remain the two biggest bill reducers, and neither moved today.
- Watch the STAR Market IPO thread. Reuters reported in September that DeepSeek hired CICC for a potential Shanghai STAR Market listing. A ¥615.5B valuation is an IPO-shaped number; the disclosure rhythm of this round suggests the company is staging toward public markets. That is when official numbers finally start existing.
