Claude Code vs Cursor Pricing (2026): Which Is Actually Cheaper?
Short answer
- The entry tiers are a near-tie: Cursor Pro $20/mo ($16 yearly) vs Claude Pro $20/mo ($17 yearly), and both now include the coding tool. The real difference is what happens after the allowance runs out.
- Claude Code has no free tier — it's bundled with paid plans only. Cursor's Hobby plan is free with limited agent requests, so $0 gets you in the door on one side only.
- For heavy agent use, Cursor sells fixed multipliers (Pro+ $60 = 3× Pro, Ultra $200 = 20× Pro); Claude Max starts at $100/mo for 5× usage with a 20× tier listed above it (monthly billing, price shown at checkout).
- Anthropic publishes the honest anchor nobody else does: API-billed Claude Code averages ~$13 per developer per active day, $150-250 per developer per month across enterprise deployments. Budget with that number, not with vibes.
Claude Code is $20 a month. Cursor Pro is also $20 a month. Most comparison posts stop right there — and that's exactly where the interesting part starts. We pulled both official pricing pages on and compared not just the seat prices, but how each product consumes your money once the plan allowance runs dry. Here is the full picture, with every number checked against the official page the same day.
Seat prices, side by side
| Tier | Cursor | Claude (Claude Code included) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Hobby — Free (limited agent requests) | Free — no Claude Code access |
| Entry paid | Pro — $20/mo, $16 yearly | Pro — $20/mo, $17 yearly ($200 billed up front) |
| Middle | Pro+ — $60/mo, $48 yearly (3× Pro agent limits) | Max — from $100/mo (5× Pro usage) |
| Top | Ultra — $200/mo, $160 yearly (20× Pro agent limits) | Max 20× — listed on the pricing page; monthly billing, price shown at checkout |
| Teams | Teams — $40/user/mo | Team — $20/seat/mo annually ($25 monthly); Premium seat $100 for 5× usage |
Three things jump out. First, the entry tier is effectively a draw: both cost $20 monthly, and Cursor's yearly rate is 20% off versus Claude Pro's ~15% off ($17, charged as $200 up front). Second, there's no free path into Claude Code — if you want to try before paying, Cursor's Hobby plan is the only free lunch on the table. Third, Claude doesn't sell a middle tier between $20 and $100; Cursor slots Pro+ at $60 for exactly that daily-agent-user gap, and its own FAQ says so: "We recommend Pro+ for daily agent users, and Ultra for agent power users."
The part that decides your bill: how each one meters usage
Seat price is the sticker; the meter is the bill. The two products draw down your money in structurally different ways.
Claude Code runs on one shared pool. Anthropic's pricing FAQ is explicit: your activity across Claude on web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code "all draws from the same pool." Hit the limit and you "can keep working at standard API rates" — meaning the overflow meter is Anthropic's public API price list (Sonnet 5 at $2/$10 per million input/output tokens, Opus 5 at $5/$25, cache reads $0.20-$0.50 per MTok on the Sonnet/Opus tiers). Your ceiling is predictable; your overflow is billed at known token prices.
Cursor includes model usage per plan, then bills on-demand in arrears. Every plan includes a set amount of usage, and overage becomes usage-based billing after the fact. The published anchor for how fast you'll hit that line is the multiplier ladder — 3× and 20× — rather than a token price list.
The per-day cost anchor (and a worked example)
Anthropic's own Claude Code cost documentation publishes what almost no comparison site does — real deployment averages for API-billed usage: "Across enterprise deployments, the average cost is around $13 per developer per active day and $150-250 per developer per month, with costs remaining below $30 per active day for 90% of users." That is the single most honest heavy-use number in this entire comparison, and it comes from the vendor itself.
Want to sanity-check it at token level? Here's a worked day at Sonnet 5 list prices, assuming a focused agent session that serves 3M input tokens (90% served from prompt cache), re-caches 310k tokens, and generates 60k output tokens:
| Component | Volume | Rate (Sonnet 5, per MTok) | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cache reads | 2.70M | $0.20 | $0.54 |
| Fresh input | 0.30M | $2.00 | $0.60 |
| Cache writes | 0.31M | $2.50 | $0.78 |
| Output | 0.06M | $10.00 | $0.60 |
| One active day | ≈ $2.52 | ||
Twenty active days at that light pace ≈ $50/month — cheaper than Max, billed as you go. But that's a light day; the official $13/active-day average over 20 days lands at $260 — actually above the top of Anthropic's own $150-250 monthly band, which tells you the official "month" assumes roughly 15-19 active days, not 20. That's the more honest way to read it: the band is real, the working month is shorter than yours. The gap between $2.52 and $13 per day is your workload — and it's exactly why Cursor's "3× for daily agent users" recommendation and Claude's "5× or 20×" tiers exist. Match the tier to your day, not to your ambition.

Which one for which developer
Light, occasional use: Cursor Hobby (free) is the only zero-cost entry — Claude Code starts at a paid plan. If you're sampling agent coding before committing, start there.
Daily driver on a budget: the $20-vs-$20 tie means the decision isn't price — it's workflow. Claude Pro shares its pool with claude.ai chat (good if you also live in the web app); Cursor Pro is editor-native and its yearly rate ($16) undercuts Claude's ($17) by a dollar.
Heavy agent work: Cursor Pro+ ($60, 3×) or Ultra ($200, 20×) are fixed-price escalators. Claude Max starts at $100 for 5×, so between $20 and $100 there is no Claude option — that gap is Cursor's home turf. Above it, compare your actual burn: if your API-rate math says $150-250/month anyway, a 20×-class plan on either side is the saner cap.
